Ultramarathon Race Rules
bullet

Start - Race start is 7:00 am for the 50 mile and 50K. Contact the organizers if you desire an earlier, non-competitive start time for either race.

bullet

Handlers - While there will be abundant supplies at the 11 aid stations, runners may have personal handlers and receive aid at any point along the course. Handlers must not drive or cycle along side the runners. Park at a safe place on the right side of the road, safely cross the road and hand off drink or food to the runner.  No parking on the left side of the road!

bullet

Pacers - Pacers are allowed for the 50 mile runners after the Vine Valley (Aid Station 8). Pacers do not pay an entry fee but must read, sign and turn in the waiver before the race start.

bullet

NEW THIS YEAR:  50K runners will be responsible for their own transportation from the Middlesex 50K finish back to the Community College.  Food, drink, bathrooms and shelter (in case of inclement weather) will be provided for 50K finishers at the Middlesex Church aid station.

Ultramarathon Race Tips
Click here for basic ultramarathon tips (notes from a May 2006 Ultra Workshop at Fleet Feet Sports Rochester).  Tips specific to the Canandaigua Fifties follow below:
bullet

Solo runners  in both the 50 mile and 50K will want to take it easy on the first leg. Relax and enjoy the scenery. There are major climbs between you and the finish.

bullet

Bopple Hill is a bear. Everyone (even the relay runners) should walk the first steep bit. When it flattens out partway up, try running. When it gets steep again, make your own decision. But, remember to leave something for a long gradual up once you turn onto Rte. 21.

bullet

The short rail to trail section after the Rte. 21 aid station may have tall grass and be lumpy.  The section is short so just take it easy and pick up the pace when you get back on asphalt.

bullet

50 Mile Runners - Use the short out & back section in Vine Valley to check out your competition... it's an opportunity to see who you might catch and who is chasing you.

bullet

The last mile to the Townline Road aid station is one long hill which is probably too steep for most of us to run all of it. This is a good place to try mixing running and walking (e.g., run 100 meters, walk 100 meters).

bullet

If you trained enough and paced your race correctly, the last two legs can be your fastest of the race (applies to both races).

bullet

Want to win the 50 mile?  Wait until after Vine Valley to take the lead.  Historically, this race has rewarded the patient runner who slows down the least in the final 15 miles.

bullet

Want to win the 50K?  Make your move after clearing the rail-to-trail section.

Rest Rooms & Showers
bullet

Restrooms and showers are located at the Start/Finish.

bullet

Restrooms are available at Onanda Park and at the Church in Middlesex.

bullet

There is the woods beside the road.
